Letter Essay #9: Lord Of The Flies

I have just finished reading a fantastic classic called Lord of the Flies by William Golding. It was written very well. I chose this book because it was supposed to be read in high school, but I needed a book and my mom said it was good. In the book, a group of school boys get stranded on a remote island. They are forced to survive with out any adults, and for a few days, life was good. But the children, or the ¨litluns” soon have nightmares of a beast that terrorizes the island. When tensions arise, the children have to chose between long term survival, or a much darker alternate…

I thought that this was a good book and the authors craft and metaphors in the book were very well thought out. A passage that I chose was on page one, where the author relates the plane crash to a scar in the earth.

¨The boy with fair hair lowered himself down the last few feet of rock and began to pick his way toward the lagoon. Though he had taken off his school sweater and trailed it now from one hand, his grey shirt stuck to him and his hair was plastered to his forehead. All round him the long scar smashed into the jungle was a bath of heat. He was clambering heavily among the creepers and broken trunks when a bird, a vision of red and yellow, flashed upwards with a witch-like cry; and this cry was echoed by another. “Hi!” it said. “Wait a minute!” The undergrowth at the side of the scar was shaken and a multitude of raindrops fell pattering. “Wait a minute,” the voice said. “I got caught up.” The fair boy stopped and jerked his stockings with an automatic gesture that made the jungle seem for a moment like the Home Counties.¨

This shows not only that the authors writing is advanced, but also this is an old book, like I said, a classic. This quote appears on page 1 of the book. I would rate this book a 10 of 10. It kept me up reading late at night and the intense action left me on the edge of my seat.
