Rebecca’s Letter-Essay #9: “Out of my Mind

April 3, 2015

I recently read Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper I chose this book because my sister recommended it to me. The book is about a girl Melody Brooks who has cerebral palsy which is a disease that enables her from talking or moving.  Melody is very smart but no one knows it not even the doctors but the parents believe that she is very smart.  One day finally gets her point across so nobody got a medi-talker.  Melody got to express yourself and tell everyone how smart she really was.  The wize kid competition was coming and Melody wanted to be in it.  I liked the way the author wrote in bold letters to express what Melody was saying.  I’m wondering why the author chose to have a character with  cerebral palsy?
I chose this passage because it really shows the way the author explains the character feelings
‘I’m always amazed at how adults assume I can’t hear. They talk about me as if I’m invisible, figuring I’m too retarded to understand their conversation. I learn quite a bit this way. But this conversation was really awful. He didn’t even try to soften the news for my mom, who, I’m sure, felt like she got hit by a truck. He began by clearing his throat.  “Mrs. Brooks,” he then said, “it is my opinion that Melody is severely brain-damaged in profoundly retarded” (Page 22)
I chose this passage because I thought it was very meaningful and showed how everyone kind of just ignoring Melody and pretended like she wasn’t there.  They ignored her.
I would rate this book A nine out of 10 because the book was really good and really pirate it made me think of people who have disabilities differently I wish there was a little more learning to get to know the people in the book because it felt like I didn’t know their personalities enough.
