This week I read The Elite by Kiera Cass, a 323 page dystopian novel. America Singer a 17 year old girl is chosen along with 35 other girls to be in a competition to win the heart of Prince Maxon. Life in the castle sounds perfect to her but there’s one problem. She’s already in love. But if the competition advisors find out , she could be put in the lowest caste. Or she will face death. Who will she choose? Her poor love, or the Prince of her whole country?
Although this idea is honestly very cheesy but somehow the author manages to make it engaging and hard to put down. This was done by adding dialogue that pulled me in, to a point where I could really replace myself with the character. I often had that rare feeling of being in the characters place for so long that when you get pulled back to reality you feel disoriented. This is one of the many reasons the author made this book so enjoyable.
A passage from the book that I enjoyed was:
“One! Cried the man on the stage, and I saw the cane fall Marlee’s hands. She let out the most pathetic whimper, like a dog being kicked. Maxon! I yelled. “Stop!”. “Two!” If I had been a better friend I would fight harder. “Marlee!” I screamed “I’m so sorry!” I cried”

In this passage Americas friend , Marlee, get’s caned for being in a relationship outside of the selection. I really liked this passage because it was stressful. Though it sounds weird, it was entertaining. Having Marlee be caned, it took a while for America to fight against the guards holding her back. It was extremely aggravating to read in a silent classroom. Particularly while wanting to punch somebody (don’t worry I didn’t.)
I would recommend this to anybody who enjoys dystopian, fantasy, or romance books. So far I rate the series 6/10.
