Sumer’s Letter Essay #10: On the Fence

The book that I have finished reading was “On the Fence” by Kasie West. Charlotte aka Charlie Reynolds was being raised by a single dad and three older brothers. She’s such a tomboy that she can outrun, outscore and outwit all the guys that she knows-including Braden, her “fourth” brother (her next-door neighbor). But, Charlie doesn’t know the anyhting about being a girl. So when she works at a boutique to pay off a ticket, she’s surrounded by skirts, dresses, and makeup. In order to make some extra money, she agrees to be kind of a “dummy” so her co-worker can try makeup on her for a class. This is how she meets the “perfect” guy, Evan. chose this book because a lot of people recommended it to me, and even though I don’t usually read these types of books, I decided to give it a try. It was interesting and had a strong plot. o cope with the stress, Charlie has late-night refuge in her bakyard, talking out her problems with Braden by the fence that seperates them. But, theres a big problem. Charlie is falling for Braden. And she knows that she doesn’t want to lose their friendship. And there’s also Evan. The guy who she thought she really liked. She can’t lose Evan. And she definitely can’t lose Braden… the stakes are too high. But the thing is, Evan has only seen her with makeup on and Braden has seen Charlie at her worst. Braden believes that Evan only likes Charlie because she acts really girly around him. Charlie is afraid that Evan won’t like the real her.  I liked how the author made the brothers really over-protective because it’s like my borthers so I can relate to that.  I liked how Charlie developed throughout the story, she started to realize that Braden was right and hopefully that Evan would like the real her. In this passage, Braden is sick of Charlie pretending not to know anything about sports, and finally says something. “You see net thing? That’s where the pitcher warms up.”

“She’s not an idiot,” Braden said. “She knows what a practice screen is.” also, “What was that all about?” he asked.

“What?”

“You pretending like you knew nothing about baseball?”

“That was me being a good date.”

“Really? Because it s you playing dumb.” pages 185 and 192-193
