Tiernan’s Letter Essay #10: Death Sentence

I have just finished reading Death Sentence Escape from Furnace by Alexander Gordon Smith. It is a very good read at 272 pages. This book was packed with suspense, action, description that had me at the edge of my seat every single time I read it. I read this book because as soon as I heard that it was good, I picked it up and couldn’t stop reading it. After I finished reading the first book I knew that I needed to finish the series.

In this book the main character Alex and his two friends Zee and Simon were so close, yet so far from escaping yet again. When they fall right into the hands of the warden, he knows what is going to happen. He would become one of them. The process is very painful and consists not only of physical change, but mental change. The warden pumps them with his poison that officially makes them one of his sons. Once Alex is finished with all the procedures, he had to pass one of the toughest tests that he has ever taken. The test that would determine life or death. If he passed then he wound become one of them. If he didn’t, then he would be thrown in with all the other people who failed. Luckily for Alex he was pumped up with more of the warden’s nectar than anyone else. All the fury that was packed into him that moment, all the adrenaline, all the nectar that was flowing through him made him eager to start. He got past the first part with little trouble. But the next was more difficult. It was the rats. A bunch of little ones, and 3 HUGE ones. The fear pushed him forward attacking the rats. Once he was done he had passed the test, and was now officially one of them. But he took that power that he had and made a break for it. He had a plan to escape.

” “Sleep,” said the warden, his voice the sound of razor on a whetstone. “When you wake you’ll feel better them you ever have before.” He turned and marched out of the room, the blacksuits a dark cloud in his wake, but he stopped before reaching the door. “Because then you’ll truly be one of us.” ” page 86

This passage struck me because I can’t imagine what i would have felt if the warden of Furnace Penitentiary said that to me. I would have too many emotions swimming through my head to even think. I rate this book a 9 out of 10 because this is the best book series I have ever read in my life.

Sincerely,

Tiernan

You will be astounded by all of the epintense action in the series. 7. When I read this book I felt the same way, you think one thing is going to happen but the suddenly it turns the other way. Personaly I liked this book the most out of the whole series because it really had a certain feel and set the tone for the series even though the first book did that also. But I hope you enjoy the rest of the series like I did.

  8. I have heard of many people reading this book. I will definitely consider reading this book in the near future. How many other books are in the series?

  10. Hey Tiernan,

I read this series a little while back and I’m really glad you like it. This series is definitely one of the best ones I have read, and it seems like you are really into it too. The next two books have the most excitement in them and you will be shocked when you read them. Next time you do an essay, try to sum up the book more briefly, so you don’t spoil anything for readers who haven’t read the book yet. Have fun reading the last two books.
    Your pal,
    Colin

    1. Hello,
Thank you for commenting on my post and complimenting my work! This book, to me, was a 9 out of 10 because it was one of the bets books I read. It always have me on the edge on my seat. Also, I would feel like I could talk to the main character at certain points of the book, telling him to run away, and to not do anything that could get you harmed. Also, I am confused on the last question that you asked! Anyway, thank you for commenting on my post!
      Thanks,
      Tiernan
