Brett’s Letter Essay #11: “The Only Game”

I just finished the book “The Only Game” by Mike Lupica, a 310 page realistic fiction novel. The only game is about a 12 year old kid named Jack. He is going through a difficult time in his life were noboyd really understands him.  His older brother died in a bike acciented and he is still heart broken about it. Then things get even worse when he quits the baseball team that was supposed to go to the little league world series. But without Jack the team is never gonna make it. When Jack quits the team his teammates get mad at him and he understands why. He ruined the teams chances of going to the little league world series. A girl named Cassie helps him when he needs it most. She stands up for him and understands what he is going through.  She is determind to get him back on the right tract.

I chose this book because I have always enjoyed reading Mike Lupicas books and when this came out  I knew I wanted to read it.  I wish that the author had explained more at the end of the book about the rest of there season.  I want to know how this team did after they won the championship. I was interested in how much the book wasn’t about baseball.

This paragraph explains how this book wasn’t all about baseball.

” Teddy Madden was halfway across the bridge, which was swaying even more than it usually did because the wind was blowing even harder up here, he had turned himself to face Jack.  He seemed to have a death grip with his right hand on the thick rope that served as a railing.  “Don’t look down” Jack said. But that was exactly what Teddy did as soon as Jack said it. He looked dwon at the falls, then back at Jack “I…I can’t get back” Teddy said. (pg. 284, 285) Read book to find out what happens next.

I really liked this passage because it showed some of hte intensity that the book had. It also showed that the book was not all about baseball. I really enjoyed reading this book and I would recomend it to anyone. I would give it an 8 out of 10 because it was very exciting and was really a page turner.
