Ella’s Letter Essay #12: The Outsiders

I recently read the book the Outsiders by S.E Hinton it was 180 pages. I chose this book because I read a little bit of Stargirl and I didn’t like it so I chose this book instead. The book takes place in Oklahoma in 1967 and is about 14-year-old Ponyboy who is part of a loosely organized gang called the greasers. The greasers are from the poor, unprivileged side of town while there rival Gang the socs which is short for socials are the complete opposite and live on the rich side of town. The people in Ponyboy’s gang include his 2 older brothers, Sodapop and Darry along with Dally, Two-Bit, Steve, and Johnny. One night Ponyboy and Johnny soon become involved in the killing of a soc when he and Johnny are attacked one night in a park.  I really liked this book a lot. I didn’t really think it would be the type of book I would like but surprisingly I loved the book. Here’s the famous part of The Outsiders. “ Johnny’s eyes glowed. Dally was proud of him. That was all Johnny ever wanted.

“Ponyboy”

I barely heard him. I came closer and leaned over to hear what he was going to say.

“Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold…” The pillow seemed to sink a little, and Johnny died.”

I chose this part of the book because it’s very famous and memorable too.

I loved this book and I would rate it 10/10 because its my favorite book ever.

  1. Dear Ella,
Wow. You really liked The Outsiders, huh? I have to say I was a good book, but I wasn’t to fond of the ending, what did you think about it? I’m surprised you didn’t like Stargirl, it’s one of my personal favorites. Why do you think you liked The Outsiders more than Stargirl? Anyways, great Letter Essay, I like the part of the book you chose to quote.

    1. Gabi,
You must not be thinking straight (this happens to students who work hard for nine months): the ending to “The Outsiders” is ONE OF THE GREATEST BOOK ENDINGS OF ALL TIME. Just wanted to be clear about that.
