Alex, Where Are You From?

Alex, where are you from? Where are you from, Alex?

I’m from waking up at 10:30 in the morning with unreal fantasies about chocolate houses and licorice palaces dancing in my head, forcing my eyes to adjust to the bright sun coming through the open window, and to a father who tells me “The day is being wasted away!”.

I’m from trudging down the stairs on cold weekend mornings in the winter, with an empty snowman tea cup and a good book in my hands, a warm fleece blanket wrapped around me, and a delicious breakfast consisting of lemon tea with greek yogurt and fruit on my mind.

I’m from the greatest, strangest friends in the universe who try to watch a whole movie in one sitting–but fail, who have late night dance parties to the best songs, and midnight meals that always start with “Anyone want pizza?”

I’m from fangirling over Calum Hood and Michael Clifford and listening to Twenty-One Pilots late at night when I have nobody to talk to, and music sounds like a great way to pass time.

I’m from a crazy family that tries to absorb as much time together before their time is up, especially at family reunions and birthdays for grandparents or great aunts or uncles. Occasions or holidays like Passover or Thanksgiving always start with a hug and kiss from grandpa, a “How have you been doing?” from grandma, and catching up on gossip with distant cousins.

I’m that day-wasting, stair-trudging, dance-partying, bored-fangirling, family-absorbing girl.

That’s where I’m from.

  3. Alex,
Your writing was really good and I really liked reading it. I liked when you said you would trudge down the stairs on cold weekend winter mornings with a good book and a blanket. I do that too so that reminded me of a good times. Your writing was descriptive and very nice. And I really like it when you said you would catch up with cousins by gossiping, me and my family do that too when we get together at reunions and you described it perfectly. Alex you had some really good writing.

    1. Alex, Your Where Are You From poem was great! I can totally relate to the day wasting, book reading in the winter time. I always enjoy yogurt w/ berries when I sleepover!!! Songs are definitely a way to pass time. I really liked your pictures! I liked how you talked about your candy dreams. It was really descriptive and reminded me of Christmas for some reason.

  4. Alex,
I really liked reading your peace, and loved the way you described your dreams as “unreal fantasies about chocolate house and licorice palaces dancing in my head.” Though I do have to say you lost me at the 4th paragraph;), it’s a good thing you described it so well as music as a great way to pass time (true…) though maybe you could describe how you fangirl. How crazy are you from a scale of 1-10? But have to say my favorite part of you poem was bout your grandma trying to catch up on gossip!!!

  5. I really like your poem. It almost made me want winter when I read about how you have the empty tea cup and the fleece jacket coming down the stairs. I would add the details about that day when you and your friends ate pizza while watching a movie.

  6. Dear Alex,
I really enjoyed reading your poem because it had great elaboration and you gave specific details and examples about what you were talking about. One time you gave a specific example about what you would do to pass time at night by saying “…listening to Twenty-One Pilots late at night when I have nobody to talk to…” . I liked that you added a specific “group” so that people know who you like/ what songs you listen too; it gives more information about you.
    Awesome Job!

  7. Alex,
I really loved reading your piece, I got to learn more about you. My favorite paragraph was the one about the cold mornings. I really liked how you put it great details like how you are wearing a warm fleece and an empty snowman tea cup. I also, loved the sentence ” The greatest strangest friends in the universe who try to watch a movie in one sitting-but fail.” I liked that because that shows that you do have great friends and fun ones too!

  8. Alex,
I really enjoyed reading your poem! It was super descriptive and gave me a very cozy feeling after reading it. My favorite part was when you write about, “trudging down the stairs on cold weekend mornings in the winter, with an empty snowman tea cup and a good book in my hands, a warm fleece blanket wrapped around me, and a delicious breakfast consisting of lemon tea with greek yogurt and fruit on my mind.” I loved this part most because it’s (of course) super desriptive and because I can relate; reading on a cold, winter’s day is my favorite thing to do!

I absolutely loved your poem! Everything you said I could picture in my head! From when you said you would trudge down stairs with a good book and a blanket in the winter, to when you talked about you dreams of chocolate houses (it left me wanting that now).
