Alexia, Where Are You From?

where are you from? Where are you from, Alexia?

I’m from staying up late with mom some nights, when it was just her and I, watching reruns of my favorite movies with the cheesy graphics, on our tiny television set.

I’m from playing kickball with the older kids in the desolate parking lot, throwing in a, “Foul! Foul!” every now and then just for fun, and learning how to trash talk for the first time. Then would come home to my small apartment feeling high and mighty.

I’m from endless bonfires spent with family that come from near and far with home cooked dishes for everyone to share, when my cousins, grandparents and aunts and uncles would roast marshmallows for each other, when the sound of gossip and laughter filled the air.

I’m from taking thirds and fourths of my grandmother’s famous soup. Before getting another serving, I’d slurp down the soup and lick the bowl clean. My grandma would always say, “It’s like you’re a bottomless pit!” and I would laugh until my stomach ached.

I’m from getting up early to have extra whipped cream pancakes on the roof of my best friends house, yelling through the window to her, “Hurry! Don’t miss the sun rise!” And we would stay out there for hours telling stories and jokes.

I’m that tiny television watching, kick ball chanting, bonfire bonding, soup slurping, early rising roof girl.
That’s where I’m from.

  1. Dear Alexia,

I really liked your poem! I really liked details your added such as ” when the sound of gossip and laughter filled the air”. One thing is that in the first where (in your title) you forgot to capitalize it. I really enjoyed hearing about some of your memories. It let me learn more about you! Great job!

  2. Dear Alexia,

I truly enjoyed reading your poem. While reading it I felt like I was there with you watching TV with you and your mom. You had really good details such as, “Watching reruns of my favorite movies and laughing at the cheesy graphics.” One thing is that for your last sentence you forgot the hyphens. But, other than that I think you did a great job. I learned some things about!

  3. Alexia,
I stopped to read your poem when I saw the word KICKBALL. I could relate to your second paragraph sooooo well. At my old school everyone, (I mean EVERYONE) lived to play kickball, we would have the best kickball games 2-8th grade and it was always a blast! I especially loved your detail and description, the way you described the tv showing your movie/show that has “cheesy” graphics.

  4. Alexia!

Wow! Your poem was so amazing, you are an incredible author! I love how you described “watching reruns of my favorite movies with the cheesy graffics”, which is also one of my favorite things to do. We’ve only just met so this poem was really great to get to know you a bit more. Just don’t forget to capitalize the first word in a scentence! Otherwise your piece was great and really fun to read!

    Gabi
