Robbie’s Letter Essay #3: The Lightning Thief

I read the book “The Lightning Thief” By Rick Riordan. The book is 377 pages long, this book genre is fantasy. It was published on March 1st 2006. I read this book because i love fantasy books. For 15 years Rick taught English at public and private school in San Francisco and in Texas. While teaching in San Antonio, Saint Mary’s Hall honored him with the school’s first Master Teacher Award. He was born on June 5th 1964

In the book “The Lightning Thief” a boy names Percy he is a good kid but cant really seem to get his head into school or really control his temper, being away at a boarding school has not helped it at all. Percy was almost sure that his Pre-Algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. After he tells his mother she decides to really tell him where he came from. After letting Percy know about his true identity his mother sends him to a camp where she knows he will be safe, this camp is called camp Halfblood. This is camp for demigods (half god half human). Percy never knew he his father he never knew would turn out to be Posiden, God of the sea. Later on a mystery unfolds and his new friends one a satyr other the demigod daughter of Athena. Percy’s adventure brings his friends and him across the United States, bringing them to the gates of the underworld to prevent a war between Gods.

I was surprised when Percy’s father he never knew turned out to be Posiden God of the sea! I really liked how the author brought the group of friends through a journey of challenges not just one big challenge. Such as when Percy and his friends have to find clues at Auntie Em’s Garden Gnome Emporium so its not just one long ride. This is my favorite passage from “The Lightning Thief”

Being a half-blood is dangerous. It’s scary. Most of the time, it gets you killed in painful, nasty ways. (1.3)

This is said by Percy, i like this because it shows how he will risk his life for the sake of the earth, he is preventing the fight between gods. He risks his life for others, that takes true courage.

I would rate this book 8/10

Yours Truly

  1. Dear Robbie,
The Lightning Thief is a great book to read, and I’m glad you finished reading it. I haven’t read it myself, but I will consider it. I like how you include information about when the book was published, and when Riordan taught at high school and San Antonio, winning his Master award. I also like how you talk about the main theme of the book, an example of this is the last line on the second to last paragraph, “he risks his life for others, that takes true courage.” One thing I think you can improve on is make sure to capitalize proper nouns such as I’s and use commas when needed (I know it’s small, but still important).
    Sincerely,
    Matt
