Brett’s Letter Essay #5: The Rise of Nine

I just finished reading “The Rise of Nine” by Pittacus Lore. This is the 3rd book in the series “I am number 4″. I have read the first 2 before and liked both of them a lot. The rise of Nine was published on August 21, 2012. The author Pittacus Lore wrote the series I am number 4. She also wrote different books that explain the confusing or more complex parts of the series. For example she wrote ” I am number 4 the lost legacies” I haven’t read it but it is about the legacies or powers of the kids in the book.  I chose this book because i read the 2 before it and really enjoyed those two.

John Smith (Number 4) the main character in the book loses his best friend to the Mogs. He also loses Number 6 when she leaves America to go find the other numbers. Everything goes wrong when Sam, his best friend gets captured in the mogs base. The location they were supposed to meet 6 at is with Sam and he is in danger. Number 4 does find number 9 in the mogs base. He has been there for a very long time and is 100% ready to fight and get out. While 6 teams up with 7, 8, and 10 in Spain 4 and 9 figure out what to do next. They must find each other and complete there ultimate goal of defeating Setrakus Ra. Can they find each other and fight Setrakus Ra? Read to find out!

I noticed how the author Pittacus Lore used his own name in the book. In the book Pittacus Lore is the Ruler of Lorien. (Lorien is the planet were all the Numbers are from) He was also the strongest and most powerful elder on Lorien and is known as there leader. I am not sure if he is still alive or where he is but they have hinted in the books that he is still possibly alive. If he is alive then I’m guessing he will make an appearance in the next book.

I wish that numbers 1-3 hadn’t died. Or that the author would have explained what happened to the numbers that died.  There are only 10 of them left to start out and before the first book even begins they are all dead. I wish the author would tell the readers what happened to them. I think it would be cool if the author did something like star wars did and went back and wrote a couple of books about the first 3.

I was interested in the passage: “those of us with chests pick them up. I take the lead, heading in the direction Nine pointed in. I scan for traps and move everyone towards the five-pronged cactus. Seven and Eight are on my heals, with ten close behind then there is a steady stream of gunfire behind us as Nine does his thing. He sounds like he’s having a party with himself back there, hooting and hallering. Only he would consider this fun. ” Pg. 316

There were many really good passages in the book and i had trouble deciding on what one to do but i chose this one because it showed all of them together. It also showed a lot of characteristics that the characters had. I would give this book an 8 out of 10. It was not as good as the first one but it was better then the second. Overall great and fun book to read.

  1. Brett,
I enjoyed reading your letter essay. I read I am Number Four before and liked it but I felt that the Power of Six was boring. I stopped reading the series but after reading your letter essay, might give it another try. I also liked the quotes that you added. They really showed the tone of the story. Nice Job.
