Sean’s Letter Essay #6 Divergent

Letter Essay 6

Dear classmates, I recently finished reading Divergent by Veronica Roth. It is a 487 page dystopian literature novel. It is the first book in a 3 book series followed by insurgent, and allegiant. It was published in 2011 and was later made into a movie.

I chose to read this book because I read the description and a few pages in the book and it seemed interesting. Also I had heard some of my friends had read and enjoyed it so I put it as my second choice and it was assigned to me.

In the novel Divergent, the main character Tris Prior leaves her original faction of Abnegation for the dauntless faction. In her world people are divided into five factions and are born and raised by each faction’s values but they are allowed to transfer to a different faction at age 16. Before transferring, each initiate must go through a series of tests that are designed to pick their new faction for them. However when tris completes the tests her results are “inconclusive”. Tris tests positive for three different factions which is very rare and she is warned that no one must know her results. Tris is a Divergent. Divergents are seen as dangerous by the government. Tris is advised to transfer to dauntless the faction known for being fearless. Early in the training the leaders of dauntless become suspicious of Tris and her abilities. She soon finds out that erudite is planning to take over abnegation and will use dauntless to help them. Tris and Four, one of the dauntless leaders, team up and try to stop erudite from taking over abnegation and dauntless. Erudite then injects all of the dauntless with a special serum to make them fight for Erudite against Abnegation. How will Tris fight and destroy her original faction? Will she rebel?

I liked the way the author designed this dystopian world with several factions each valuing different things. This creates tension between the factions that is sure to create rivalries and conflict.  The genre of this book is dystopian literature. I’d compare Veronica Roth to S.A Bodeen who wrote the Compound and the raft, because the have very similar styles of writing.

The following quoted passage is how tori tries to explains tris’ test results to her. This is important because it shows how rare and dangerous it is to be a divergent.

“People who get this kind of result are…she looks over her shoulder like she expects someone to appear behind her…’ Are called… Divergent.” She says the last word so quietly that I almost don’t hear it, and her tense, worried look returns. Chapter 3, page 22.

I would rate this book an eight out of ten. I really enjoyed it!

Sincerely,

Sean Eustace

  1. I’m glad you enjoyed the book, Sean. Developing your elaboration in your Reflection will improve your letter-essays in the future. So will explaining what you liked about the writing in the quoted passage, which should be a bit longer than the one quoted. Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Mr. Jockers

  2. Dear Sean,
I enjoyed reading your letter essay about Divergent, I am currently reading that book in book clubs. I liked the way you included a short but effective passage from the story. Also, you can improve by making your passage a bit bigger because it has lots of information but a really short passage. But, overall good job.
    Sincerely,
    Will

  3. Dear Sean,
I also read the book Divergent for the dystopian literature unit. I think you did a very good job summarizing the book with giving the ending. One thing you could work on is elaborating using the sentence starters from your readers notebook. Overall, nice job.

I really enjoyed reading your letter essay because I felt that it was so well written. I also read the book and used the same quoted passage as you. I also thought that you described the book very well without giving the book away.
    Great job.

  6. Dear Sean,

I thought your letter essay was excellent and really well written. When I read this book in 7th grade I personally disliked it. But I’m glad that you liked it. The summary of the book was very well done. But I think you could have expanded your quoted passage a little more.

    Sincerely,

    Julio

  7. Dear Sean

I thought your letter essay was ver well thought out and neatly written. I just finished reading divergent and you described the book in such a perfect way. The only thing to work on is elaborating or expanding your quoted passage.

  8. Dear sean
I didn’t like it that much but I get why you did. I liked that you quoted a very. Important passage from the book instead of just building up the character.

  9. Dear Sean,
I have not read the book Divergent but because of your very good letter essay. I think you did a very good job summarizing the book without spoiling the ending. A possible thing that you could potentially work on is maybe elaborating a little bit more using the sentence starters from your readers journal. Overall, it was a very well written letter essay.
