Letter Essay #7

Recently I have finished reading Unwind by Neal Shusterman Unwind has 335 pages of which all are exciting as the last. This book was published in 2007 and has been a hit ever since. I chose this book for book club based off of a recommendation from my friends who read it the first round of book clubs, and I am very glad that I listened to them. Neal Shusterman has also written Unwholly which I will read soon because it is similar to Unwind.

In this book, kids from the ages 13 to 18 can be unwound by their parents. Being unwound is when your body is taken apart and your parts are still alive but are given to other people. AWOL unwinds are kids who have ran away and are on the run from the Juvey-Cops whose main job is to hunt down AWOL unwinds, and Connor is a AWOL unwind who escaped when he found the form is his dad’s desk for him to be unwound. Most of the time the kids do not know they are going to be unwound so they do not have a chance to escape. While Connor is on the run he sees a bus crashed that is full of unwinds and Connor sees one that is trying to escapes so he helps her sneak into the woods to escape from the Juvey-Cops who are already chasing Connor, but as Connor is going to the woods he sees a kid who is about to be shot by the cop so he risks his life to go back and saves him. But later Connor finds out that Lev is a tithe and is being released for his religion and that Risa lives in a state home and is being released because there was not enough room in the home. Connor, Risa, and Lev must be on the run until they turn 18 so they are no longer allowed to be unwound. Will they make it? Or will they be caught and unwound before their birthday.

This book reminds me of the Maze Runner by James Dashner because in both books kids are chosen to be used for someone else. In The Maze Runner the kids were chosen for Wicked to be put in an experiment to find a cure for a disease that could wipe out the entire country, and in Unwind kids are sent to give their parts to other people against their will. One part I agree with is that they get captured for a little bit to add suspense so the reader does not know whether they will survive or not. One part I disagree with is when Roland gets unwound because Roland is Connor’s biggest enemy and has been threatening to kill him throughout the entire book. My favorite part in the book is when Connor is escaping and jumps on the Cop’s head and shoots him with his on tranq-gun. I like this part because it adds comedy to a very serious situation and later in the book everyone knows Connor as the Akron AWOL and they all look up to him. I would rate this book a 9 out of 10 because there was so much action sprinkled with comedy.

  1. I really enjoyed reading your letter essay. It was very well written. The part that i liked most was how you included a lengthy quoted passage. You should try to work on elaborating on your three sentence starters from your readers notebook. It would give your essay more feeling.

  3. Dear Jake,
I really enjoyed reading your letter essay. It was very well written. I really enjoyed how you included very good information about the author. You should try to work on elaborating more and making youre letter essay a little bit more lengthy. That is my own oppinion and you dont have to do so. Just a suggestion.

  4. Great Letter Essay Jake I really liked how you described the book because I could understand everything you were saying. Also I heard that Unwind was a really good book and I might give that a try. Great Job.

  5. I really enjoyed reading your letter essay and I am glad you enjoyed reading it! It does kind of suck that Ronald got unwound and what happens as a result of that.Unwind is actually part of a series and Unwholly is the 2nd book. Except I don’t see any passage, besides that great job!

  7. Good letter essay Jake! The high score you gave the book makes it look good and it seems like an original book (it is not a book with a similar plot to another). I did not see a quote but maybe it would a spoiler.

    George

  8. Jake, this was a very good letter essay with a very good summary, one thing you could’ve added was a quoted passage to give an example of the author’s writing, otherwise it was very good.
