Dear Classmates,

The book that I just finished reading was Animal Farm. Animal Farm was written by George Orwell. George was born in India in 1903. Gorge was always sick at a young age and he that left a lot of time on his hands so he would write a lot. He had strong opinions on communism and other big controversial ideas. He wrote Animal Farm in 1945. His other big book was written four years later and is called 1984. George dies soon after in the year of 1949. The reason why I read this book is that it seemed to be a interesting book with the idea of animals talking and taking over a farm. I liked this book because it had interesting ideas and it shows how in the beginning of the book that humans are mistreating the animals and all that was true.

In Animal Farm Old Major an old pig wants to rebel and take over the humans. In the beginning of the book Old Major gives a speech and says that he and his farm should take it over because they are being mistreated. If there was a prospective of the farmer he would disagree. He would disagree because it is the way that farming has been happening for years. But the problem is that the animals can’t just take over the farm and tell the humans to leave. So what happens is the animals come up with an elaborate plan to kick out and scare the humans away. After that the animals are stuck with having to live on their own, and their first big project is to get the windmill made and put up. The animals run into a whole bunch of problems throughout the book and the learn how to solve them but in the end of the book the pigs end up more like the humans then the animals. The pigs end up how they were in the beginning but this time the pigs are in charge.  

A part of the book that I liked was when old major give his speech in the beginning of the book.

“Man is the only creature that consumes without producing. He does not

give milk, he does not lay eggs, he is too weak to pull the plough, he

cannot run fast enough to catch rabbits. Yet he is lord of all the

animals. He sets them to work, he gives back to them the bare minimum that will prevent them from starving, and the rest he keeps for himself. Our

labour tills the soil, our dung fertilises it, and yet there is not one of

us that owns more than his bare skin. You cows that I see before me, how

many thousands of gallons of milk have you given during this last year?

And what has happened to that milk which should have been breeding up

sturdy calves? Every drop of it has gone down the throats of our enemies.

And you hens, how many eggs have you laid in this last year, and how many

of those eggs ever hatched into chickens? The rest have all gone to market

to bring in money for Jones and his men. And you, Clover, where are those

four foals you bore, who should have been the support and pleasure of your

old age? Each was sold at a year old–you will never see one of them

again. In return for your four confinements and all your labour in the

fields, what have you ever had except your bare rations and a stall? “

This is my favorite part of the book because it exposes the harsh realities of farming. It may be all good for the humans but all the animals do is give and give and the humans just take with giving back just enough so that the animals don’t die.

I would rate this book a 8 out of 10 because it is good but kind of repetitive in the middle of it.
