Sarah’s Letter Essay 8# Specials

A while back i finished Specials by Scott Westerfeld. Scott Westerfeld was born in Dallas, Texas. He now lives in New York City and Sydney, Australia. He won The 2015 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for his book specials. This book was publish in March 2006 and it is the third novel in a series. This book is young adult fiction as well as dystopian literature.

I chose this book because  at the end of  7th grade i read uglies and pretties (the other two books in the trilogy). But i never got around to reading specials. This year in ILA class we did book clubs and one of our choices was uglies, i decide to reread uglies as my book club book as well as rereading pretties and i finally got around to reading specials.

This book is about people that aren’t categorized as pretties or uglies they are specials these kinds of people are rare lots people never have the chance to  meet one. Specials are people who aren’t only stunningly beautiful  but they are very fast and strong. The specials main purpose is to keep the social classes in order, which basically means to keep the uglies at the bottom of the social class and to keep the pretties from overpowering the specials  There aren’t many specials and tally is one of the few. This book is about Tally and a choice she has to make, its either go on the missions like a regular special or go and follow her instinct of something more.

I don’t agree with how the author made this book all about Tally and the choice she has to make because i typically don’t like those kinds of books because the endings are too predictable and the story sometimes just drags on. I read this thinking that the specials were almost like half robot half human because when i think of missions and very fast and strong characters i think of robots or bionic people. This book reminds me of reboot because in reboot Wren has to make a big decision as well and that’s what it’s about her making the big choice.

“I’m not sure what I am anymore… Sometimes I think I’m nothing but what other people have done to me―a big collection of brainwashing, surgeries, and cures… That, and all the mistakes I’ve made. All the people I’ve disappointed.” pg 51

This quote shows how Tally is thinking and what she is going to take into consideration when she makes her decision. This also shows how even when someone has “everything” they aren’t always happy with themselves. I also chose this quote because i never realized how much she has been though just for her looks.

I would rate this book a  4 out of 10 just because it was good, it wasn’t very interest or anything i haven’t heard before. Thanks for reading my letter.
