Letter Essay #8: Animal Farm

Greetings Mr. Jockers,

For my 8th Letter Essay I picked George Orwell’s 1945 novel, Animal Farm!  Animal Farm was dystopian novel which contained 141 pages. George Orwell’s real name was Eric Blair. George Orwell was just a pen name.  George Orwell was born on June 25, 1903 in Motihari, India.  He grew up in England and overtime he believed in Socialism, a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.  In 1937, he fought in the Spanish Civil War on the side of the Spanish Republic.  In August of 1945,  he published the novel Animal Farm to warn the public about the threat of Communism.  I chose this novel it is overall a classic novel that I wanted to read and enjoy.

In small farm in England a group of animals no longer want to be ruled by their cruel farmer, Mr. Jones.  So they overthrow him to establish there own government known as Animalism. But, eventually their government ran by the Pigs goes corrupt and the animals begin to regret the Rebellion.  So will their be a second rebellion? will Mr. Jones be reinstated? or will Animalism spread worldwide?  You can find out when you read… ANIMAL FARM!!!

I was surprised when it was discovered that the pig, Snowball was working for Mr. Jones the entire time!  I liked the way Orwell was able to warn the about the West about Communism’s threat to the rest of the world.  This book reminds of how harsh living under Stalin’s harsh policies.  I was interested in this passage, “Four young porkers in the front row uttered shrill squeals of disapproval, and all four of them sprang to their feet and began speaking at once. But suddenly the dogs sitting round Napoleon let out deep menacing growls, and the pigs fell silent and sat down again.” – pgs. 54-55.  This passage is important because basically, the public is protesting against an act of the government and is immediately threatened, which basically one of many harsh ways people were treated in the Soviet Union during the reign of Stalin.  Honestly, I give this novel a 10 out of 10!

Sincerely,

Raymond Joseph Martin III.

  2. Dear Raymond,

Great job! I have also read Animal Farm, and I agree with you about how good of a novel this book truly is. On your next letter essay, you might want to try to make the paragraph summarizing the book just a little longer and add some more detail to it. I really like the quote you chose, as I really feel as though it really shows the feelings and what happens throughout the whole book. Overall, great job!

    Sincerely,

  4. Dear Raymond,
I really like how you made your letter essay suspenseful to egg on the reader to pick up this book. One thing I think you can work on is not giving away a big plot twist like the fact that Snowball was working of the farmer the whole time if you really want the reader to read it. In general nice job!

You did a good job of not giving away the ending of the book. This kind of makes me want to read it, almost as if i’m in suspense. I also believe you picked a very good quote. I would give a little more background information on the book though. Overall, great letter essay, and I look forward to reading the next one.

I like how you included good information about the author in your first paragraph. I also like how you worded your second paragraph to try and leave a reader in suspense by asking questions. I think your summary paragraph could have been a little longer, but overall nice job.
