Letter Essay #8- Double Identity

I recently read a 2005 novel by Margret Haddix; Double Identity. This mystery teen novel is a great read. Margret Haddix is a 52 year old woman who has wrote a ton of novels. She is known for her two series; Shadow Children and The Missing. Margret grew up on a farm and then went to Miami University. She has written over 30 books, and won many awards! Her books have also been translated in many languages! This author is very successful. I chose this book because I was in the media center and I only had a certain amount of time, I have seen people with this book and I thought that I should try it.

Double identity, the 224 page book is about a 12 year old girl, Bethany Cole who enjoy’s school and gets over protected by her parents. She wants her mom to stop crying because there is no good reason in Bethany’s eyes why she should be crying, but out of no where the very loving family that Bethany once had, takes her on a road trip to a aunt’s house that her parents have never once talked about. Once they arrive at the mysterious aunt’s house Bethany rolls down her window while her dad and aunt are talking, with out them knowing. Bethany hears them talking about not saying anything about Elizabeth; another name Bethany has never herd anything about. Her parents leave her with this aunt. Bethany learns about her family’s secret’s while visiting her aunt, has to find where her parents are and why they left her.

This is a way of the author using a really good description explaining Bethany’s thoughts. I wish the author used more of these detailed descriptions. This scene is when Bethany was home for the fist time by herself.

“And then Myrlie’s gone, and the house is dead silent. I stand at the window watching her blue car disappear from sight, and I feel abandoned once again. I stumble back and sit on the couch for a sound, any sound- the hum of the refrigerator, the tick-tock of a clock, the breathing of the furnace, There’s nothing,(page 51).

This is a really good part of the book it is when the climax builds and it starts a creating a lot of mysteries.

I like the way the author built up to the suspense in this book. It made the book a huge page turner. Margret Haddix really built on this by adding and replacing words into words that build the climax. I wish this book shared more of Bethany’s thoughts. The thoughts were very obvious and nothing out of the box. Although some stories include crazy thoughts I think you should have a happy medium between the two. I would compare this book to stolen children or the run away twin in both the stories they show what teen girls do upon hard situations. That is why I would compare them both.

I would rate this book a 8 out of 10 because it wasn’t my favorite but is was really well written and it had a lot of suspense. I am not a huge fan of mystery books but this book was really good.

  10. Dear Rebecca,
Pretty good letter essay. I do think that you could have gone into more detail on why it is good and why it is a good quote. You kind of just say it is good and do not give many details.
