Does homework help you learn?

Every year kids in all grades are given homework. In some grades kids are given more than others. But, how do you know if it is helping? Well most kids ask their parents for help on there homework because they don’t understand it. However, most kids come home to empty houses and no one one to help them and it is hard to get math help over the phone.

When I home from school I get my homework done but in the spring and fall, I have sports and sometimes in the winter making it hard for me to get it all done right away. Also, a lot of kids have after school activities and are faced with the stress of getting your homework done and be late to your activity or to just do your homework later when you are tired and ready for bed.

When you first start you homework you don’t know how long it is going to take because on some days you might have more homework then other days or more projects or more stuff to do. On average in high school you have 4 to 5 sets of homework a week taking from 75 minutes to 150 minutes. You are spending a hour or up to 2 ½ hours a day on homework. While homework reinforces the learning of that day, is it really worth all the stress? According to Healthline when kids keep getting homework piled up on top of homework what happens is not good, when students are pushed to handle a workload that is too much homework at once, it can lead to significant stress.

A study was published by the “journal of experimental education they suggest that 2 hours of homework a night for students is counterproductive”. But kids who took part in the study reported that they did more than 3 hours of homework a night. Which leads to more stress due to the pill up of homework that they have.

One way that this issue can be fixed is by having a certain amount of time to do homework out of school. Both the National Education Association and the National PTA support a standard of “10 minutes of homework per grade level” and setting a general limit on after-school studying. This will cause less stress for kids because they won’t be faced with a ton of homework. If they can’t finish because it is to hard or they don’t understand they can go into study hall the next day to get help and to understand the work they are tasked with.
