The Truth About Breakfast

Breakfast is skipped by more than 60% of americans every day ,but what most people don’t know is that breakfast really is important. The phrase “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!”is used millions of times a day.  The constant use of this phrase has appeared to dull its meaning and, therefore, lost it’s effectiveness. Today, many scientific studies have answered the the million dollar question; is breakfast really the most important meal of the day?

The people who skip breakfast daily do not realise that skipping this meal can really mess up their bodies. Studies have shown that a lack of breakfast can  knock your metabolism out of rhythm by not having anything for your body to convert to energy. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a study of 300 obese people. The researchers split them up and divided them into 2 groups. Group A would be breakfast while group B would be would  skip breakfast. They put the people on a weight loss program and the results showed that group B significantly lost more weight during the program than group B. This proves that breakfast can be beneficial to those who want to maintain a healthy weight.

Another study published by the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health found that when children thirteen and under ate breakfast performed better on tests than those who did not eat breakfast. Overall, skipping breakfast could lead to bad outcomes. As breakfast helps fuel the brain, many children do not have the nutritional powerhouse of breakfast to help fuel their brains. Imagine how many teachers would be pleased with their first period classes if students were nourished properly prior to arriving to school! What we need to do is sharpen and encourage the dull phrase; “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” by educating all children of its importance. No one should have to go a full day without breakfast without knowing the negative side effects.
