Free Write – Olive H. “I remember”

When the time comes this nightmare of a sickness will be over. Hundreds of thousands will have said goodbye. The rest of us remain living remembering all that we have lost and what we indeed have to gain. I will cry, then laugh, then smile. The locked doors that once kept us safe, will once again open wide. There will be movie nights with friends and family held snuggled up on couches well passing around the well enjoyed popcorn. There will be children flooding through halls in clusters, no longer in long socially distanced lines. Day after day, minute after minute there will be change. The streets will flood with familiar faces, glowing, dancing and for a moment there will be no fear. The once 6ft boundaries will be broken with leaps in arms, enveloped in love and joy. We will be free. Months ago we thought something was nothing. A sickness that sparked, a fire that burned, an election roared. The word that each and every child could spell. The word that started with a C and felt like it never ended. Covid 19. I dream of a day like before. Before the outbreak, before the tests, before the fear. I remember the day when it all began. It was a thursday. We all thought we would be back 2 weeks later, but we were seriously mistaken. Kids stumbled out of classes, packing up lockers, bags in arm. Hugs, hand sanitizer and smiling thoughts of and what we thought of as an early vacation. I remember the before with ice cream parties, choir, hugs, and huttles. I remember, I remember and I smile.

  1. Hi Olive. Your free write was very poetic and honest. I really liked it. I too cannot wait for the day when covid is over. Together we will laugh about how funny the whole thing was (hopefully soon)!

  2. I loved this story Olive! The details you gave were so rich and really made the story. I also thought some of the repetition you used really helped show how important some of the details were.

  3. Hi Olive!

I really loved how you story really made me think. You didn’t just come out and say what you meant, you made us really think about your words and their meaning. I also think you did a really great job summarizing all of the crazy details of 2020 into one clear and concise paragraph. Hopefully COVID will be something in the past that we can laugh about soon!

  4. First of all congratulations this is great! I think that this pretty much what everyone has been thinking for the last few months and then turned it into a polished, sophisticated, well written paragraph, I remember thinking that this would all be over in 2 weeks maybe 3. I particularly liked the beginning it was very well done and reminded me a little bit of poetry. Great Job 👏
