I read the book The Little Prince is a 83 page classic book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. A french fighter pilot in World War 2 who was shot down by one of his many fans. The man who shot him down was deeply saddened when he was told that he shot down one of his favorite authors. He was shot down over german controlled territories.  I read this because it was highly recommended by my peers and my teachers. Another reason I read this book was because it is a timeless book that everyone should read.  The little Prince was published in 1942.

 

The pilot’s (who is the main character in the book) plane crashed in an African desert and as he was repairing his plane a small man (The little Prince) showed up and asked the pilot to draw him a sheep. Through the entire book  I was waiting for the author to explain why the little prince asked for a sheep. Out of all the animals in the world why a sheep? Personally I Think that the author was making a connection to the bible when it says that humans are sheep and we need someone to herd us. The little prince also asks many more questions like when he asks “How can I protect my dear flower from the sheep because all sheep eat plants?” The author simply responded “I will draw you a muzzle.” He also talks about life on his home planet. The pilot learns that the little prince comes from a small planet that the little prince calls Asteroid 325 but that people on Earth call Asteroid B-612. The little prince took great care of this planet, preventing any bad seeds from growing and making sure it was never overtaken by baobab trees. One day, a rose grew on the planet and the little prince fell in love with it. But when the rose lied to him, he decided that he could not trust her anymore. He grew lonely and decided to leave, the prince set out to explore other planets and stop his loneliness. On his journeys the little prince passes by neighboring planets and encounters for the first time the strange, narrow-minded world of grown-ups. On the first planets the little prince visits, he meets a king, a vain man, a drunkard, a businessman, a lamplighter, and a geographer, all of which live alone and only care about their chosen occupations.

I wish that the author explained why the little prince asked for a sheep not a productive animal or multiple other animals.I’d say the theme of the book is don’t take the world so seriously  just stop and believe in the small things and it will affect your life. I was surprised when the little prince and the author found a well in the middle of the desert.

I was struck by the passage “If you please draw me a sheep.What? Draw me a sheep[page 15]” It shows the author is a very deep and expressive when he is writing.
