Bio-Poem: Mr. Jockers

Ryan

Patient, honest, industrious, dependable

Son of Thomas and Linda, brother of Erin (who’d be 45 if she were still alive)

Lover of life, family, and the changing of New England seasons

Who feels thankful at the start and end of every day, comfortable in his own skin, and blessed to be doing what he loves to do

Who finds happiness in his children’s laughter, comfort in his wife’s smile, and serenity in a small cottage beside a salt marsh and a short walk from a modest beach in Old Saybrook where the same ice cream lady who has visited routinely since my wife summered there as a child knows everyone’s name

Who needs a purpose, strong black coffee to complement quiet morning reading and reflection time, and at least one hot cherry pepper with almost every dinner meal (except Taco Night: that would be a clash of cuisines)

Who gives love and guidance to his children (Paige, who is nearly 17, and Christian, 13), attention to the moment he is in, and far too much money to Xfinity and various streaming services for the amount of television he watches

Who fears God, snakes (those evil serpents!), and the direction in which the world is heading (but apparently people have always felt this way)

Who would like to see his children grow up happy and healthy and with children of their own, the high school soccer team he coaches to have a winning season, and a temporary worldwide ban on social media

Who enjoys playing the acoustic Yamaha guitar he got while in college (especially in the sunroom on rainy summer days), fixing things at the workbench he built in his garage, and going on long runs on cold but sunny weekend mornings

Who likes to wear old, worn cotton tee shirts and shorts and sandals in the summer, sweatpants and sweatshirts while lounging around the house during much of the rest of the year, and button-down collared shirts with quiet ties at work

Who lives in a beige split-level ranch near the peak of a ridge on a quarter-acre lot near Roosevelt Forest in the northern part of Stratford, Conn.
