The Sickening Pressure From Society On Girls

Six o’clock in the morning. Most girls are already up, frying their hair with a straightener, caking makeup on, and depriving themselves of breakfast, because they can’t have the extra pounds. Long hair, clear skin, small waist, big breasts, and thin legs. That’s the image that girls see and need to look like, because of the society we live in. Everyday girls are up at the ungodly hours of the night, looking in the mirror with tears in their eyes asking why they aren’t good enough. These girls are on the bathroom floor shoving two fingers down their throat because they’ve just about hit their breaking point, on a Thursday night after some guy called her fat behind the malicious screens we are so absorbed in today.  Finally, these girls are walking into school with a smile on their face because if you’re crying, no one will ever respect you in the same way they used to. Why do we do this to ourselves? We do this because of the sickening pressure society is putting on girls to have perfect bodies. Magazines, television shows, models. All of these things are showcasing women fitting that image, and making girls think that’s what beautiful is. They are showing girls, that’s the look needed to be happy with yourself, so if yours doesn’t match that, change it. This is why eating disorders and plastic surgery rates among girls are increasing. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, about 229,000 cosmetic procedures were performed on patients aging 13 through 19 in the year 2017 alone. Along with that, three in one hundred American women suffer from bulimia and one in two hundred from anorexia nervosa, according to the Mirasol Recovery Center for Eating Disorders. Girls are killing themselves over the fact that they don’t look like what society is showing, and it’s absolutely heartbreaking. In addition to just the outside world showing us we aren’t good enough, there are people that are talking women down because of their appearance. According to the New York Times, “In March of 2012, Donald Trump attacked Cher, the singer and actress, over her criticism of Republican candidates running for office, saying on Twitter that she should “stop with the bad plastic surgery and nasty statements.” No one is trying to remedy this deplorable situation.  We need to eliminate the pressure on women, by changing the way magazines, movies, and billboards advertise girls. Instead of women in size 0 jeans, show women that feel good in a size 8. Now after reading this, go up to a girl and tell them they look beautiful no matter what you think, because we all deserve to feel good enough.

  1. I really liked how you delivered it, and I enjoyed the conclusion because it helps you to understand how much of a issue this is. It also shows how easy it is to stop it, and make each other feel good.
