Johanna’s Letter Essay #11: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

I have just finished reading the book title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K.Rowling. I have been wanting to get around to reading this book, and have been recommended by basically everyone I know, as well as everybody at the HKMS library. I could see why it is so popular, the book had me hooked till the very last page, which I finished in one night. This 309 action packed book had me wrapped around it’s finger. This amazing book is about a boy named Harry Potter being born into fame. After his parents are killed when he was a baby, his aunt and uncle take him in and treat him like a piece of dirt. With no idea what he actually is, Harry Potter has a rough childhood. After he gets a letter being accepted into Hogwarts, the best magic school there is, his whole world turns upside down. I chose this book because of everyone who pushed me to read it, and it was worth it. I loved the author’s craft and everything the author did in the book, it really felt like you were there. This book is a bundle of everything, and you will love it no matter what you are into. This passage from the book had so much description I thought I was there,

“ It was very difficult. Harry and Seamus swished and flicked, but the feather they were supposed to be sending skyward just lay on the desktop. Seamus got so impatient that he prodded it with his wand and set fire to it – Harry had to put it out with his hat. Ron, at the next table, wasn’t having much more luck.

“Wingardium Leviosa!” he shouted , waving his long arms like a windmill.

“You’re saying it wrong,” Harry heard Hermione snap. “It’s Wing-gar-dium Levi-o-sa, make the ‘gar’ nice and long.

“You do it, then, if you’re so clever,” Ron snarled.

Hermione rolled up the sleeves of her gown, flicked her wand, and said Wingardium Leviosa!”

Their feather rose off the desk and hovered about 4 feet above their heads.” (171)

This was when Harry was in a charm class and they were learning to make a feather fly. This book was one of the best that I have read in a while. I would rate this book a 9.9 out of ten because of how excellent it was.

  1. I knew you would like this series! It looks like you enjoyed reading it as well. Can’t wait for you to catch up.

  2. Johanna,

I can also say I’ve held off on giving this series a shot for some reason, however my hesitation left because I’ve realized how much positive feedback and love this series has got. Surely, I wasn’t let down, like you as well. I believe I started it last year and now I’m on The Goblet of Fire (fourth book), it’s quite thick.. It’ll be worth it though! I do recommend you to keep reading the books they’re really great! -vmachado2 http://www.flags8.org/

  3. Honestly I am not a Harry Potter fan, I’ve really haven’t read one of the books but I have seen some parts of the first movie. It’s seems really interesting but very confusing. Would you give me explain the Harry’s relationship with certain people ?

  4. Hello Students from San Diego,
Thank you for commenting on my post! It is so cool that students across America can communicate. First off vmachado2, That is great that you are reading the series and I really love it myself. I just finished the series and I was not disappointed. As for nbin you should really try the Harry Potter series! I never thought I would read it because it was too childish. I was highly wrong and I heavily suggest the series. It makes a lot more sense if you read everything.
